What is a brand? Think of the way you feel when you walk into your favorite store. How their merchandise is displayed, the lighting, the colors, the music, the smell, the way the employees greet you, the quality of their products, their return policy, how they handle an upset customer, the look and quality of their packaging.

That feeling you feel as you walk through the doors is the result of that company being crystal clear on who they are, what they stand for and what they want to offer their customers… all of which results in their brand. A brand is so much deeper than just a logo and a couple colors, right?

A logo or symbol is something that has a connection to you and your company. Where a brand is something that everyone can share a connection to. Seth Godin explains it perfectly, he says “A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one brand or service over another.”

When done correctly and when it stays true to a brands core values, it’s like laying a quality brick to build your brand. STEP ONE

Be clear on who you are as the founder of the company. If you don’t know who you are how can you be clear about what you want to build?

STEP TWO 

Why do you want to build your brand? Don’t skip this one because it might seem too simple, this is an important question.

STEP THREE

What are the top three things your company stands for. Be specific and have conviction about these three things.

STEP FOUR

What is the ultimate goal of your company? What kind of legacy do you want to leave?

STEP FIVE

 How do you want your customer to feel when they “walk” into your store? You might not have a brick and morter store, but I think you get the idea. How do you want them to feel when they go to your website, social media page or when they receive an email from you?

Now comes the hard part,

staying true to those five things

you just wrote out.
